Rossano is the city of codex and licorice. Before the tenth century, greek monks arrived to the Diocesan Museum bringing the “Codex Purpureus Rossanensis”, a manuscript of the New Testament, on a purple scroll, very interesting from historic, artistic and religious point of view.
In fiew minutes you can get to the Abbazia Santa Maria del Patire by car, founded by Monk San Bartolomeo di Simeri in 1095, on the ruins of a oratorio. This Abbazia is surrounded by green hills and it keeps suggestive arabian mosaic floor.
The Licorice Museum is the only in Italy to show the tools used for working and commercialisation of the licorice, extraction of the roots and also objects, manuscript and dresses of Amarelli family. In Rossano you can also discover a lot of works from greek settlers. Don’t you forget to taste tipical dishes, for example the “Lumincian chin” (stuffed eggplants).
